Rookie Octavio Dotel notched his seventh straight win and Mike Piazza hit a three-run homer as the New York Mets posted a 7-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
Dotel (7-1) allowed one run and four hits over seven innings. He walked four but struck out nine to remain unbeaten over his last 12 starts. The 23-year-old righthander has been very impressive of late, surrendering five earned runs over his last 20 innings.
The victory moved the Mets within three games of the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East.
Pat Mahomes allowed two runs without retiring a batter in the eighth and Dennis Cook surrendered a home run to Ellis Burks later in the inning. Armando Benitez came on and got the final five outs for his 18th save in 23 opportunities.
The Mets broke out to a 3-0 lead against Shawn Estes (10-8), then took control of the contest with four runs in the sixth. Piazza capped the outburst with his 33rd home run, a three-run shot against Miguel Del Toro that put New York on top 7-1.
Estes was tagged for six runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked six and saw his five-start unbeaten streak come to an end. In two starts against the Mets this season, Estes has been hit hard, surrendering 11 runs and 15 hits in 10 2/3 innings.
